With seconds to spare I hid inside a cupboard, and remained there while they searched the place, adrenaline pumping, wondering if they would ever leave or if they'd open the cupboard door and I'd have to somehow fight my way out - if I even could. Completely under my own steam, I phoned numbers in the deceased's address book, scanned fingerprints, and was about to leave to chase my newfound leads when I heard police at the door. I skulked around for clues on what happened, pinning dozens of tidbits of information to my investigation board, and drawing links between the pins as I saw fit. Following a lead, I journeyed to an apartment where I came across a dead body. I played an hour or so of an admittedly rough demo and it was overwhelming, frequently stressful, but honestly quite staggering in its ambition. That's right - not even the crimes are scripted. It's a sandbox detective game where everything is procedurally generated, from the rain-soaked hyper-industrialised noir city to its hundreds of inhabitants, and even the crimes and cases themselves. Ollie: Shadows Of Doubt is a game you should be interested in even if you don't intend to play it. Shadows Of Doubt Developer: ColePowered Games Alas, the 20-odd minute demo in this year's Next Fest doesn't leave you a lot of room to get to know many of your round lads, but cor, what a great first impression all the same. The more you level them up, the better they become, with my blob guys growing out of bad habits and into newer, more useful ones. Honestly, I should have guessed from the name 'Bandages' Alvarez. What's more, each rotund blob dude you recruit has their set of randomized quirks and personality traits you'll have to deal with too, which includes wigging out at the sight of corpses (of which there are many in a general run of Mr Sun's Hatbox), and having a 'skin condition' where medkits actually hurts you. It's entirely unpredictable, and I absolutely love it. With only a set number of fulton balloons at your disposal, you'll be swapping hats and weapons throughout your run, chucking soup vats for springy punching gloves and baguettes for bow and arrows. This is a platforming roguelike that feels both tightly controlled and wonderfully chaotic in the hands. All you need to worry about is bopping them on the noggin, nicking their headwear, and maybe fulton balloon-ing both them and their weapon back to your underground HQ Metal Gear Solid V-style so you can prepare for your big, end of level hat heist. Who are the other blobs with legs in Mr Moon's employ? Doesn't matter. Katharine: One of this year's IGF nominees for Excellence in Design, Mr Sun's Hatbox is a game with an exceedingly daft premise - Mr Sun's hatbox gets stolen by the dastardly Mr Moon - that's executed to absolute perfection. But, after months of having superhero strength in Marvel’s Midnight Suns, that’s exactly what I need. These little troops barely stand a chance. that guy.īut, even after it threw me out of the frying pan, clobbered me with it, doused me in oil, and chucked me into the fire of a UFO crash site, I came out with a wide grin. My favourite death so far is a soldier whose name I didn’t even get a chance to learn, because they got shot on round one, went berserk, and blew themselves up with a grenade launcher. They might get got by their own teammate, who knew they’d miss a shot but decided to go whole hog and commit anyway. They might shoot your troops through a slim line of sight that you could never have predicted. In fact, much of my time with the demo was spent getting slaughtered by them. It’s an overwhelming game, and one that offers little guidance in learning how to defend the world from aliens. Hayden: Xenonauts 2 is a tough-as-nails split between base management and turn-based tactics that, like its predecessor, harkens back to the X-COMs of old. Xenonauts 2 Developer: Goldhawk Interactive For now, though, here's what we think you should download first in this latest February Next Fest. We'll be playing and writing about more demos across the coming days, so watch out for further highlights later in the week. There are no doubt loads more great demos to play across the next week and a bit that we haven't covered here (as well as some like The Great War: Western Front whose demos we wrote about in more detail last week), so if you happen across something neat, be sure to shout about it in the comments. Like previous Next Fests, we've only had access to a small portion of the full February Next Fest slate ahead of time, and what you'll see below is a selection of games that stood out to us the most in that early slice.

But if it's something dumb, like accidentally killing yourself by one of your bullets bouncing back at you, or it could have been easily avoided. So we've decided that we'll try for a no-death run, BUT we'll take a death if it's one of those dramatic kamikaze-style deaths that really couldn't be avoided, and doesn't waste TOO much time. We actually couldn't find any way to have a death save us time: in fact, it WASTES time whenever a player dies, since the other one has to go and mop up the tanks that the other didn't kill. If anyone has any ideas for 17-18-19 (the only levels we truly have left to analyze and closely practice), we'd love to hear them! Not so much for the later ones though, particularly 17. We've got the strategies solidified for most of the early levels, and I'm fairly certain we're close to optimal time on those. We're doing pretty well, but still have a bit to go. My brother and I FINALLY got a chance to practice this weekend. Yeah, that Tales run should be great to watch.Īnyway, a bit of a progress report. Of course, if we DO find a sacrifice saves time. I'm assuming a death would only slow us down, because the one left alive would have to finish any tanks that the other didn't (unless its one of those dramatic finishes where you kill the final tank but their last bullet finishes you off too, haha.). but I'll leave it up to you guys whether we should actually work for no deaths, or just take them if we get them. Off the top of my head I can't really think of a sacrifice that would be beneficial in terms of time saved. Until then, I'm open to suggestions from anyone who might have anything to suggest!Īh, right, and about the no deaths. I will of course post the plan and times when I have them (should be after this weekend, when we start practicing). Until then, we'll just strategize, try to think of the fastest possible times for each level, and set up a plan. Still, we see each other pretty often, and the plan is that he's going to stay over for a week before school starts for him, so that's when we'll actually be recording. I don't have a good sense of the time this will take yet: after all, there's kind of the small detail that my brother and I are a two-hour drive away from each other, haha. Wow, alright, I'm sold! This is actually the response I was hoping for.Īlright then, I just called my brother, we're in. What do you guys think? Interesting, or meh? We've never timed ourselves so I don't know a ballpark time, but if someone wants to know I can find out.Īnyway, I now leave this open to discussion. I think the two-player element of it would be the most interesting, personally (are there ANY multi-player runs on SDA? I actually don't know of any myself.). Just in case people don't know how this works: in the single player version of the game, you have lives and there's like 100 levels (I think), but in the TWO player game, there's only 20 levels, and there's NO lives, so if you die, you lose and have to start from the beginning! (It's okay if ONE person survives, although to make it interesting, we wouldn't even allow ANY deaths.) This would be a single-segment, two-player, no-death run of Wii Play Tanks. I come and ask, is ANYONE even REMOTELY interested in seeing a speed run for Wii Play Tanks? It wouldn't be THAT hard, but we're willing to do it if there's enough people asking for it. we got thinking, WHY don't we speed run the game and submit it? your bullets are limited (there can only be 5 of your bullets on the screen at one time, so you want to conserve a few for defensive purposes), and the fact that they can bounch off walls just opens up more doors for stragery.Īnyway, after a while we got so good at beating it, we joked that we should speed run the game and submit it. It wasn't just "rush the other tanks and shoot as fast as you can". Unlike all the other games on Wii Play (okay, fine, Find that Mii and a few others are fun SOMETIMES.), Tanks is one of those games that had a lot of hidden strategy to it. but for some reason it's just always been fun for us. So my brother and I are the undisputed (and completely unproven) MASTERS at Wii Play Tanks. Darker still are the secrets inscrybed upon the cards. The technical attack specifics include the exploitation of a 2018 vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2018-14847. “Moreover, all those highly capable devices, not your typical IoT blinker connected to Wi-Fi – here we speak of a botnet consisting of, with the highest probability, devices connected through the Ethernet connection – network devices, primarily,” researchers wrote. Yandex and Qrato launched an investigation into the attack and believe the Mēris to be highly sophisticated. Tunneling facilitates the transfer of data between two private networks across the public internet. L2TP is a protocol used to manage virtual private networks and deliver internet services. The number of infected devices, according to the botnet internals we’ve seen, reaches 250,000,” wrote Qrator in a Thursday blog post. L2TP tunnels are used for internetwork communications. “Yandex’ security team members managed to establish a clear view of the botnet’s internal structure. Both are believed to be smaller precursor attacks by threat actors behind the Mēris botnet, which have yet to utilize the enormous firepower. The Yandex attacks occurred between August 29 through September 5 – when the 21.8 million RPS attack occurred. Researchers have linked Mēris to the August 19 DDoS attack tracked by Cloudflare. By comparison, infrastructure and website security firm Cloudflare reported that the “ largest ever” DDoS attack occurred on August 19, with 17.2 million RPS. Attackers, according to Qrator Labs, exploited a 2018 bug unpatched in more than 56,000 MikroTik hosts involved in the DDoS attack.Īccording to Qrator, the Mēris botnet delivered the largest attack against Yandex it has ever spotted (by traffic volume) – peaking at 21.8 million requests per second (RPS). Those requests reportedly originated from networking gear made by MikroTik. This DDoS technique is called HTTP pipelining, where a browser requests a connection to a server and, without waiting for a response, sends multiple more requests. A massive botnet, dubbed Mēris, is believed responsible, flooding Yandex with millions of HTTP requests for webpages at the same time. Technical details tied to a record-breaking distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attack against Russian internet behemoth Yandex are surfacing as the digital dust settles.
